gayle, I've been toying with the fish tank idea, but there are a couple of roadblocks to the idea. #1 where would I get the fish from, I wouldn't want 100 fish fry and #2 predators - herons and raccoons, I would have to come up with an idea to protect the fish from those 2 especially the coons.

woolybear , how about covering it with chicken wire? I can buy the fish individually at a fish hatchery near me.

woolybear, gayle, What y'all are talking about is call "hydroponics", and can be scaled up to a huge operation similar to what a prepper in Springfield has done.

Ozarks Tom, you're right. I remembered it right after I posted. I even told my DIL about it. I've seen where people float beds on a pond. I would try it, except for the bears and mountain lions by the pond. I'll stick with the yard.

woolybear, you could just go to a lake and net some small fish. Probably best not to get caught, though.

Used to be a guy drove through here in a tank truck wholesaling fish to Talapia growers.
Maybe check with local extension service?.....Joe

I guess if I ever did the hydroponics fish raising I'll sneak down to the creek or over to the river and just do what gayle, suggested and not get caught lol

I'd be wanting to raise those good eatin' fish while I was at it. After the first generation they won't cost any more than the mud cats and carp out of the lake .....that's if you can get warm enough waters for them to breed. There is a monastery not far from here where they have shallow ponds on the grounds with Tilapia growing in them. I do not know if they are strictly for eating or if they also sell them to locals, but it looks like a GREAT way to turn skeeters and grasshoppers into food....Joe

joebill, not sure how I would raise the tilapia to a size for breeding. It sounds like they are a fish who likes warmer water and it can get a bit "frosty" here during the winter (5 degrees a couple of times this winter). I guess if push really came to shove I could figure out how to tap into the outside wood furnace to heat up the fish tank. But first I'll have to learn how to use the outside furnace. That was DH's department I just fixed the fire, he did all the cleaning and maintenance.

Carp? nope, nope, nope. Best recipe I ever saw for making carp was the following...place carp on a board, place on grill and cook fish until done, throw away the fish and eat the board. I ate carp once, didn't care for it at all. If I would catch a carp now I would toss it to the chickens, at least that way I could get something good from it to eat.
