May 15 This was not what I'd classify as frugal so much, but it had to be very special. Our church lost 2 men a year ago, one day apart from each other. Neither were sick or elderly. One was in my top 3 best friends of my life, a brother not by blood. I had to order several pieces from the florist to make sure I'd have enough for 2 arrangements to match/mirror. A sister of one of the fellas we lost wanted to honor both of them for this week. Some greenery, rhododendron, hydrangea, oak leaf hydrangea, and peonies were from friends' yards. Other stuff I bought pieces. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Only just now saw all your updates. How beautiful, and how incredibly sweet and thoughtful of you!
I am so sorry you lost your brother-by-heart. Such special friendships are hard to come by, and the loss stings a bit more...

I didn't read the full thread, but if you are providing some of your own elements in the arrangements, you might consider a couple of things that might help.
Statice flowers are quite easy to grow in most areas, and look exactly the same when dried as when they are growing. They can be hung upside down in bunches for winter use.
I used to call on flourists in the fall and winter, selling them dried stuff from the desert for winter arrangements, and one of the things they liked best was Manzanita branches, the dead ones. I soaked them in bleach water, laid them in the sun, they turned blinding white. Sometimes they used them white and sometimes they spray painted them some color that blended well with what they were doing.
Many other woods like drift woods would react the same to the bleach and looked well in arrangements.
I'm not a florist, but the floral designers were some of the most pleasant folks I ever called on. Most businesses treat peddlers worse than most folks could imagine, but the floral designers were always happy to see somebody with interesting stuff to sell.....Joe

This is one of my most favorite ever, from back in September. It cost ZERO. (well, the oasis material and my time) The lady who asked me to do it likes me to use whatever is in her yard. She has rose bushes she planted in memory of her husband. And a big farm with big old bushes and greenery, some weeds, and that's it. Attachment Deleted

This was September also. I'm behind on pics. In memory of a lady who loved yellow flowers. Attachment Deleted
